I play both bass and guitar. I was just wondering if a normal guitar Crybaby would sound good on bass or if I should spend double the amount and not have a pedal for guitar. My main instrument is bass, but not only am I cheap, but I really like to play guitar in my spare time.|||Hi--There is a reason why Dunlop makes a guitar CryBaby and a separate bass CryBaby: frequencies.
A wah pedal minipulates the high and low frequencies of sound. The guitar puts out higher frequencies than a bass guitar, and, therefore, the guitar specific CryBaby was not created to handle a bass's low-end frequencies. Many bass players wanted to include a wah-wah pedal in their rig, so Dunlop created a wah specifically designed to handle the low-end frequencies.
Just as the guitar CryBaby isn't made to handle the low frequencies of the bass, the bass CryBaby isn't set up to handle the higher frequencies of the guitar.
You aren't going to get the famous CryBaby wah sound if you play a guitar through the bass wah; and, quite frankly, if you play a bass guitar through an original CryBaby wah you wouldn't be doing your sound any favors (nor the pedal).
Jim Dunlop spent years creating and tweaking the CryBaby (guitar) wah so the GUITAR frequencies would get the best response possible when minipulated; same for the bass. So I highly recommend you use the bass wah for the bass frequencies, and the guitar wah for the guitar's frequencies.
Having said that, since you stated that you are cheap*, I would suggest that if you INSIST on buying ONE pedal...buy the bass pedal. The bass is your main axe and your bass will sound incredible; your guitar will sound like mud, but it will sound better than a bass through a guitar wah (personally, I wouldn't play my guitar through the bass wah, but you should buy the pedal made for the axe you use the most).
** I don't think you are cheap: I feel your pain when it comes to the high price of great sounding effects pedals. It would be much better if you buy the bass CryBaby and go without a guitar wah for awhile, rather than buy two lower priced crappy wahs. It's better to have one great pedal than two pedals with horrible tone.
You can find a used CryBaby guitar wah on eBay for a reasonable price. Maybe buy the bass wah and then save up for a month or two and buy a used CryBaby--they are built like a tank, so you'd have a great chance of buying a great used pedal. Of course, when buying on eBay, make sure you buy from a reputable dealer--check their feedback--and make sure there is a reasonable return policy.
